Combigan Eye Drops is widely used combinational drugs (Brimonidine +Timolol) in the treatment of eye disease such as ocular hypertension and glaucoma (open-angle type) which is caused due to high pressure inside the eye. This eye drop prevents loss of vision by lowering high pressure inside the eye. These medications are used together when one drug is not managing the pressure inside the eye.

Mechanism of Action

Brimonidine belongs to a class of medicines famous as alpha agonists. It acts by allowing better fluid drainage from within the eye and also by reducing the amount of fluid made in the eye. Timolol is beta blocker which functions by reducing the amount of fluid formed in the eye.

Contraindications of Combigan Eye Drops

  • It is contraindicated in patients with an oversensitivity reaction to any constituent of Combigan Eye Drops.
  • It is contraindicated in patients with immediate airway ailment such as bronchial asthma or a history of bronchial asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • Avoid the use of this eye drop in patients with sinus bradycardia, cardiac failure, and second or third degree atrioventricular block.
  • Do not use Combigan Eye Drops in neonates and infants 2 years of age and younger.

Drug Interactions of Combigan Eye Drops

  • Avoid concurrent use of this eye drop with alcohol, barbiturates, sedatives, opiates, and anesthetics as this medication potentiating the effect of CNS depressants.
  • Do not use this medication concomitant with calcium antagonists and Digitalis as this may have additive effects in prolonging atrioventricular conduction time.
  • Avoid Combigan eye medication combined use with CYP2D6 inhibitors such as SSRIs, and Quinidine as this may potentiate systemic beta‐blockage.

How to Use Combigan Eye Drops?

Adults and children ≥2 years: The dose of Combigan Eye Drops is 1 drop in the affected eye twice a day, about 12 hours apart.

Wash your hands properly. Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze out a drop. Close your eyes for 2 or 3 minutes with your head down, without blinking. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for about 1 minute, to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct.

Side Effects of Combigan Eye Drops

More common side effects of this medication may include burning in eye, pink eye, red eye, itching, stinging in your eye. Fewer general side effects may include allergic reactions, muscle weakness, heart failure, and breathing problems. Combigan may hide signs of low blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.

Precaution While Taking Combigan Eye Drops

Precaution and safety points to be followed while using Combigan Eye Drops:

  • Do not permit the tip of the bottle to touch your eye or any other surface, as this can infect Combigan Eye Drops.
  • Avoid driving or work machinery, or connect in other works which requires alertness until while using this medication.
  • Remove your contact lenses before using this eye drop. You may put your contact lenses 15 minutes after you use Combigan.
  • If you are using another eye drop with this medication then you should apply the drops at least 5 minutes gap.
